Windsurfing Equipment
The complexity of windsurfing equipment is somewhere between snorkeling and scuba diving. While snorkeling only requires a swim suit and a snorkel, scuba diving requires full body covering as well as several other pieces of equipment for breathing and safety. Windsurfing falls in between those two extremes because while there are some required pieces of gear, and some recommended safety items, it’s not as intense as scuba diving.
In order to windsurf basic equipment, such as the board and sail, is necessary. However that’s not the end of the list. You’ll also need rigging, a harness, and fins for your board. Each of these items provides a specific feature that enables you to control the board more easily.
Properly equipping your board for the conditions is imperative. For instance, in low wind you’ll want to use smaller fins on the underside of your board than in high wind. The smaller fins allow less drag on the keel of the board, which makes you more maneuverable in low wind conditions. If you’re using fins too small for conditions, the wind will keep blowing you off course because your board can’t hold its line well enough.
