Windsurf Boards

When you’re shopping for windsurf boards, it’s helpful to understand the terminology of the sport. If you can’t tell the difference between a freestyle board and a freeride one; how can you possibly make the right choice? There are two ways to go about learning: you can do the research yourself or ask someone in the know. Since you’re here, it’s safe to assume you’re looking to do the former.

Windsurf boards vary greatly depending on their purpose. Freeride boards are the cruising board of the windsurfing world, they aren’t meant for lots of turns, jumps, and tricks. They are comfortable, though not extremely maneuverable. Wave boards are the board to use when you want to perform tricks, they are very agile and can be seen flying high out of the water. An even more specialized trick board is the freestyle board.

And those are just half the menu when looking at windsurf boards! You still have all of the racing variants, such as the slalom board. This board is designed to achieve top speed, and wasn’t built with maneuverability in mind. A step back from slalom boards are the Olympic standard racing boards. In the Olympics, every racer is outfitted with identical equipment to even the playing field. There are also formula windsurfing boards which have specifications controlled by the International Sailing Federation.
