Surf Gear
What you need in terms of surf gear varies greatly depending on what variant you plan on attempting. For example, if you were going to try traditional surfing you’d need a board, an ankle tether, and a swim suit. That’s it… you’re good to go. Now, without any additional training you probably won’t get much done, but that’s beside the point.
However, other types of surfing require more gear, and more knowledge as well. For instance, to windsurf you have to be familiar with many sailing terms, as well as how to adjust your sail’s rigging, in order to effectively try it. As far as surf gear goes, in addition to the board you’re looking at a mast, a boom, a sail, a full body harness, and rigging lines. Oh, and if you’re nervous about hitting your head on any of the various pieces of metal around you, pick up a helmet too.
Kiteboarding requires gear that’s similar to windsurfing. Instead of a sail, you’ll need a kite. Instead of a mast and boom, you’ll need a harness, a mooring point on your board, and a length of line to secure the kite to your board. Again, because of the potential for injury, a helmet is often used in kiteboarding.
